Residents of Wallside Grange Care Home in Tamfourhill, Falkirk, had a surprise visit from a Champion piper during Burns Night celebrations at the home.
While tucking into their lunch, residents noticed the faint sound of bagpipes on the air outside of the home. Gavin Walker, a former Pipe Major with the House of Edgar Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band, walked through the grounds of Wallside Grange piping loudly.
Mr Walker, who won the piping championship at Markinch Highland Games in 2009, was escorted into the dining room to play traditional songs while the lunch service continued. Residents enjoyed singing along and shouting out their requests. After the performance, Gavin joined residents in the lounge to answer questions about his career as a piper. While he was there, and still dressed in full tartan, he posed for a few photographs with residents, visitors, and staff.
Wanting to make the most of the Burns celebrations, a few of our residents expressed their wishes to attend a local Burns Supper. The team at Wallside Grange organised for the group to join the Burns evening at the local community centre in Tamfourhill. Escorted by members of the care team, residents enjoyed an evening of traditional celebrations including the reading of some of Robert Burns’ most famous poems. While classic Scottish songs played, the group dined on a traditional Burns supper of haggis, ‘neeps and tatties,’ all washed down with a few drams of whisky.
