Residents at Wallside Grange Care Home in Falkirk definitely had their ‘sea legs’ when they set sail on a local canal.
With the home so close to the Forth & Clyde Canal at Tamfourhill, outings with local charity the Seagull Trust were a much-loved part of life at Wallside Grange prior to the pandemic.
Residents would regularly board one of the charity’s barges to spend a relaxing afternoon cruising the waterways.
As you can imagine, news that the canal trips would soon resume was met was much excitement.
Ruby Johnstone, Ann Haffey and Margaret Hastings climbed aboard a beautiful canal boat for the first cruise in more than two years. They enjoyed a round trip from Falkirk, taking in Linlithgow and the countryside in between.
Setting off from the Seagull Trust’s Falkirk base, the journey offered lots of lovely and peaceful scenery giving the sailors a real feeling of getting away from it all.
The home’s manager Melanie Bundy is delighted that residents can once again enjoy the canal trips. She said: “I am so pleased that our residents’ lives are getting back to normal after the restrictions of the Covid pandemic.
“The canal journey was always a firm favourite, particularly when the sun was shining. Watching the world go by at a leisurely pace is so therapeutic. I know Ruby, Ann and Margaret were counting down the days until they could set sail! None of them had been on a canal boat before so I am very pleased we were able to arrange it for them. A huge thank you to the Seagull Trust for helping to organise this.
“I am sure that once again these outings will be a very popular part of our varied activities programme.”
With a dedicated activities coordinator, Wallside Grange offers a variety of exciting group and one-to-one activities as well as day trips around the local area.
